Junior Bikeability Cycle Skills

Kingston Council’s Cycling Team provides subsidised training for young cyclists from Year 5 and above who live or attend a school in the Royal Borough of Kingston.  All Bikeability training is delivered by accredited Instructors and leads to a certification required by many Primary and Secondary Schools.

Bikeability is the new Cycle Proficiency for the 21st century. It is the national standard for cyclist training to get more children cycling, more safely and more often. Read more about it on the Bikeability website.

Scooter Training
Schools in Kingston can receive scooter training for children in years 1&2. The training, which is delivered by accredited cycling instructors not only increases skills but also improves confidence, awareness and consideration of other pavement users. Please enquire with your school or contact the Cycling team.

Bikeability Level 1 and 2 - Schools
Courses are delivered from February to November during school terms. There are also free holiday courses during the Easter and Summer Holidays. Course details, once set up, are always published on the Council's cycling pages here

The week-long courses include:

  • bike checks
  • control skills
  • Highway Code
  • on-road cycling on quiet public roads

Successful completion is rewarded with a badge and certificate to show a satisfactory standard of achievement for those wishing to cycle to school on quiet roads. Please enquire with your school or contact the Cycling team.

Advanced Cycle skills Bikeability (level 2 and level 3) - We come to you
We provide a 2 hour one-to-one session aiming to give young cyclists the ability to do road journeys independently. 2 trainees can share the session. This is only suitable for Level 2 achievers and confident cyclists. Following a practical assessment of trainees skills, we will recap Bikeability Level 2 and proceed to learn more advanced skills such as:

  • route planning
  • how to deal with roundabouts, traffic light controlled junctions and main roads
  • cycling in heavier traffic

There are some excellent videos showing the levels of cycling you can achieve through Bikeability training here

New for 2016 - balance bike training is now available for children in School Year 3 and above.

Become a cycling instructor

If you love cycling, you might consider becoming a cycling instructor. Whether you would like to make it a full-time job or you just want to pass on some skills at your local school or youth club, undertaking the National Standard Instructor training is the first step.

Kingston is the only London borough recognised as an instructor training organisation (ITO). Since 2007, we have trained more than 300 instructors for local authorities and independent providers.

You can read more about our training here, and learn more about being a Bikeability Instructor here

Get involved?

Cycling is a fantastic way to exercise, travel, and enjoy the great outdoors. Wind in the hair (under your helmet of course), sunglasses on, and a picnic in your bag. However, not everyone sees it this way.

Therefore, CycleKingston is appealing to you to share the good, the bad (and the ugly?!) We want to hear your cycling experiences, news and showcase success stories along the way too.

If you have material you think we should feature on the website, drop us an email on info@cyclekingston.net with the information and some images and we'll do our best to feature them.
